Introduction to Plant & Soil Science (PSSC 101) is General Education (GE) course that is offered to all majors at Chico State. The course is offered in fall and spring, and is made of two 50 minutes lectures in campus, and a 2.5 hour lab at the University Farm. In the farm, each student is given a garden plot to grow vegetables and learn about gardening. Students also our greenhouse space to learn about research, and plant science related topics such as propagation, germination, plant-microbe interactions. in the lab, students are introduced to plant stomata, biological nitrogen fixation, osmosis, and mycorrhiza. At the end of the course, students share their vegetables with friends and family, and cook dishes from their vegetables as their last lab activity.
